We decode some of the triggers for this common concern and reveal the products & wellness tips to help get your tresses back on track.
While we commonly shed between 80-100 hair strands a day, visibly thinning hair or patches of hair loss can signal a change within the body. Hair loss can be both genetic and reactive and as we age, our hair tends to get thinner due to the natural lifecycle of our strands. While the texture and appearance of our hair may change seasonally, due to environmental causes or if we choose to dye or treat it, an overall reduction in hair volume can be noticeable. To help, we’ve curated products that will help give your tresses a thicker appearance while our in-house nutritionist Ella Owen advises on the supplements and wellness steps you can take to promote healthier, fuller locks.

Why Do We Lose Hair?
The cycle of every hair strand from Anagen (the active growing phase) to Catagen (when hair rests and stops growing) to Telogen (hair loss to make way for a new strand) naturally renews your tresses. This process continues throughout your lifetime and the natural way we grow and lose hair.
Other factors in hair loss on both a larger and smaller scale can include a genetic predisposition (such as baldness), diet or stress-related changes and even our hair care techniques. For example, putting added strain on the hair with tight hairstyles like cornrows or repeated tugging can weaken the follicle over time and create a pattern of hair loss around the areas the hair is strained. Damaged hair can also appear thinner over time as weakened strands break and snap off, giving the hair a limper appearance.

- Illness
- Stress
- Cancer Treatment
- Weight Loss
- Iron Deficiency
- Genetic Factors
- Hormonal Imbalance

To help give the illusion of thickness, use these clever styling tricks:
- If your hair is in a ponytail, backcomb the crown of the head around the base of the hairband before securing it, this will add height and the illusion of thickness
- Concentrate styling products on your roots and blow dry the hair upside down to help give it more lift
- Ask the hairdresser to add layers around the mid-lengths of your hair, this way the hair won’t fall flat and the slight movement will give it added body
- Use a dry shampoo spray to add texture to the ends of your hair, this will help balance out the appearance of each strand and replenish volume

What Supplements Support Hair Growth?
According to Ella Owen, our in-house nutritionist: “Collagen is a protein in the body that can help retain hair thickness and quality. The amino acids found in collagen supplements supply building blocks to the body that are needed to make proteins, such as the keratin found in hair.”
Top up on collagen types 1 & 3 with the NeoCell Super Collagen range:
NeoCell Super Collagen +C Tablets 6,000mg
NeoCell Super Collagen +C Powder 6,600mg
NeoCell Collagen + C Pomegranate Liquid 4,000mg
In addition to collagen, a diet rich in minerals such as iron, zinc, selenium and silica may prevent deficiencies – and potentially prevent hair loss. Ella recommends, “A good multivitamin/mineral supplement such as Garden of Life Once Daily Women's Multi may help to prevent nutritional deficiencies, as part of a balanced and varied diet. There is also some research that suggests essential fatty acids such as omega 3 (found in quality fish oil and vegan Ahi flower oil) may benefit the quality of hair.”
