Supporting children’s immunity this Autumn

Supporting your family’s immune health as well as that of your valued customers when children go back to nurseries, schools and even university will undoubtedly be at the top of your agenda.

Lockdown and life during the co-vid 19 has had such an impact on all of us and changed our lives in many ways. As you may know, mental and physical wellbeing can both be affected by daily stresses and cause an underlying state of inflammation. Inflammation is a series of processes and is the root cause of illness. This can occur in adults but also in children. It in turn, affects our immune’s system resilience and ability to fight back viruses and pathogens.

  • Nutrition and Lifestyle

Balanced nutrition and a good sleep routine play an important role in children’s immunity. Dietary intakes of all forms of fibre (pulses and wholegrains) , essential fatty acids, fruits and vegetables, fermented foods are supportive of a healthy immune system.

  • Vitamins and Minerals.

The Department of Health recommends that children from six months to five years old to be provided with Vitamins A, C and D supplements. With that in mind, you can provide a selection of products for them to choose from.

The sunshine vitamin D, is recommended for all ages throughout the year. Particularly true if quite a few children have had to shield during lockdown. Supplementation is required, as only small amounts of Vitamin D can be found in food.

Vitamin A is also important as it helps to support the immune system, healthy vision and keep the skin healthy. Easily found in food sources such as dairy products and fruits and vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, swede and mangoes. Vitamin A is also present in dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, cabbage and broccoli. Struggling for recipe ideas, for family ideas, we would recommend this recently published cookbook, The Family Kitchen. They have all been easy to follow and successful in our house!
