Movember is a worldwide awareness event with a mission to help men live happier, healthier and longer lives. Starting out with humble beginnings in Australia, it has now become a popular campaign- championing men’s health across the globe.
During the month of November, men are encouraged to grow a moustache ‘to help change the face of men’s health!’ This leading charity’s interests centre on prostate and testicular health, as well as men’s mental health and wellbeing.
Men are more at risk of losing their life as a result of mental health issues - it is thought that three out of four suicides in the UK are by men. Movember backs projects to help men establish positive social connections that improve overall mental health. In light of the recent lockdowns and pandemic, this is more important than ever.
Our resident nutritionist looks at how nutrition plays a role in men’s health and recommends gender-specific nutritional products.*
Diet is key to male energy and resilience – both psychological and physical. Essential nutrients including B vitamins found in the diet contribute to normal psychological function and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
Zinc is of importance to men’s health as it contributes to the maintenance of normal testosterone levels in the blood and also plays a role in male fertility. Selenium contributes to normal production of sperm.
Why is organic important
A research study by the Harvard School of Public Health observed that men who ate fruit and vegetables containing a lot of pesticides (i.e. non-organic), had lower sperm counts and poorer semen quality than men who had lower levels of dietary pesticide exposure.
The results from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (2020) commissioned by Public Health England suggest that our intakes of fruit and vegetables, fibre and some micronutrients are lacking in relation to official advice – and that on average people are not eating the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.
With many men leading active or stressful lifestyles or eating a less than optimal diet, there is a greater risk of shortfalls in the essential nutrients needed to sustain optimum wellness. A quality gender-specific multi-nutrient formula can help to bridge this nutrition gap.
