Hyssop Herb Highlight

Hyssop is a flowering plant that has had a long history of traditional use. The herb has been used for centuries in folklore to support the respiratory system especially in the case of cough, common cold, catarrh and sore throat. It has also been historically used to aid digestion and support relaxation.*

A member of the mint family (Lamiaceae), hyssop is an aromatic plant native to southern Europe and Asia. It presents distinctive violet-blue flowers (some varieties are pink or white). Blossoming in the Summertime, the flora often attracts honeybees. The fragrant flowers have a pleasant minty odour.

In traditional herbalism the flowers and aerial parts of hyssop have been used in preparations designed to support the body in expelling excess mucus from the respiratory system, to help the body to remove excess catarrh built up in the sinuses, and generally support the respiratory system in the case of coughs and common colds.

Hyssop also has a history of use as a culinary herb and can be found as one of the major ingredients in the famous French liqueur Bénédictine.

Research has looked into the antioxidant activity of various polyphenolic compounds and flavonoids found within hyssop. The natural constituents of hyssop include volatile oils, monoterpenes (including pinocamphone), sequiterpenes, bitters, flavonoids and tannins.

Hyssop is a name of Greek origin, true hyssop has the botanical name Hyssopus Officinalis not to be confused with the similar named plants; Anise Hyssop (Agastache foeniculum) or Water Hyssop (Bacopa).
