Vitamin D3 & K2 = Synergy
Vitamin D & Vitamin K2 work as a team: the synergistic interplay between these two nutrients is now more widely understood and appreciated. Vitamin D assists calcium absorption and Vitamin K2 is a co-factor in calcium utilisation, helping to ensure calcium is deposited in bones.
Vitamin D3 and K2 are vital to health in so many ways:
• Supports the normal function of the immune system
Public Health England recommends Vitamin D supplementation for all, to strengthen and protect the immune system as well as optimise the body's resilience against infection.
• Supports the health of our teeth, joints and bones
Vitamin D supports the absorption of Calcium, a key mineral to healthy joints, bones, muscles and teeth. Vitamin K2 supports Calcium metabolism, helping to ensure Calcium is deposited in bones (instead of arteries and soft tissues).
• Supports our emotional wellbeing
Vitamin D has been well researched as a key nutrient involved with an individual's mood. Low levels of vitamin D have been found to be linked to low mood and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The national Public Health recommendation is to supplement with Vitamin D3, all year round.
• Support our sleeping patterns.
Vitamin D is an essential component of our sleep-wake cycle. Research has shown a direct link between low levels of Vitamin D with disturbed sleep, insomnia but also waking up feeling unrefreshed.
Why do we need Vitamin D3?
• Commonly referred to as the ‘Sunshine Vitamin’, Vitamin D is produced naturally by the body following exposure to sunlight (roughly 30 minutes) depending on such variables such the skin type we have and the time of the day.
• Deficiencies of Vitamin D are however very common, and is not only due to the lack of sun exposure. Deficiencies can be due to the following, but are not limited to:
Where we live
Malabsorption issues
Lack of sun exposure due to cultural differences
Dietary patterns- it must be noted that only 10 % of our vitamin D can be found in food sources such as fish, dairy and eggs. The remainder 90 % however, must be obtained through supplementation.
• Public Health England officially recommended Vitamin D to be taken through winter and autumn. However, it is good to consider supplementation all year round if you are feeling unwell, staying indoors for extended periods of time.
